Dear Parents,
In today's backpack mail is a letter from Mrs. Nakayama. In the event that the Chicago Teachers Union has to go on strike on Tuesday, it is important that you are aware of the contingency plans in place. In the event of a strike, all classes and extracurricular activities are cancelled. You are encouraged to keep your children at home or at a non-CPS facility during the strike. School will not be in session, so students will not be marked absent. If it is not possible for you to keep your children at home, school buildings will remain open for the normal schedule from 8:15-3:15, led by Mrs. Nakayama and other non-CTU staff members. There are also Chicago Park District and Chicago Public Library sites that will be available to students. You can go to cps.edu/strikeplan or call 311 for information on the most convenient site for your family and register your family if they plan to attend. Food service will be provided at each site and activities will be planned to keep students safe and engaged. Students are also encouraged to work on any class assignments they might have been assigned. CPS buses will not be operating, but the CTA will provide free transportation to students from 5:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Please know that we teachers do not want to go on strike. We would much rather be in the classroom with our students! We will only go on strike if it is deemed necessary by the Chicago Teachers Union in order to receive a fair contract so that we can serve your children in the best way possible. Your children deserve highly qualified teachers, reasonable class sizes, and resources to enhance their learning. This is what we are fighting for. If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to me or Mrs. Nakayama.
Thank you,
Ms. Sharp
